What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters (kg/m²).
Measuring Methods
U.S. Navy Method: If you are looking for the exact military formulas, you can use our dedicated navy body fat calculator or army body fat calculator. This method uses a tape measure to determine the circumference of specific body parts (neck, waist, hip) and compares them to height.
BMI Method: You can use our BMI calculator to estimate body fat based solely on height and weight. Less accurate than the Navy method for athletes or those with high muscle mass.

Ideal Body Fat Percentages (Jackson & Pollock)
Developed by researchers Jackson and Pollock, these standards are often used in bodybuilding and fitness to determine ideal body fat. Generally, the "ideal" range aligns closely with the "Fitness" and "Athletes" categories defined by the ACE, varying slightly based on age. Younger individuals tend to have lower ideal percentages than older individuals.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is this the most accurate body fat calculator?
While no at-home method is 100% perfect, the U.S. Navy circumference method used here is widely considered the most accurate body fat calculator that doesn't require clinical equipment like a DEXA scan. It is typically within 3-4% of clinical results, making it far more reliable than a standard BMI calculator.
Can I use this as a body fat calculator for male and female users?
Yes, this calculator works perfectly for both men and women. Simply select your gender at the top. Note that the female formula requires an additional hip measurement, which the calculator will automatically ask for if "Female" is selected.
Does this body fat calculator support kg?
Yes, you can use this body fat calculator in kg (Metric) or lbs (U.S. Units). Use the "Measurement Units" dropdown at the top of the calculator to switch between kg/cm and lbs/inches.
Do I need a body fat caliper to use this calculator?
No, you do not need a body fat caliper. This tool uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which only requires a standard, flexible measuring tape to measure your neck, waist, and hips (for women).
What is my ideal body fat percentage?
Ideal body fat percentages vary by age and gender. Generally, the "Fitness" and "Athletes" categories on the ACE chart are considered ideal for active adults. You can view the exact ideal ranges in the "Jackson & Pollock Ideal Body Fat Percentages" section on this page. To learn more, read our complete guide on BMI vs. Body Fat Percentage.
How should I measure my neck and waist?
Keep the tape measure level and flat against your skin. For the neck, measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). For the waist, measure around your navel (belly button) at the end of a normal exhale. Do not pull the tape so tight that it compresses your skin.
Can athletes or bodybuilders use this calculator?
While the U.S. Navy method is better than BMI for muscular individuals, it can still occasionally underestimate body fat for athletes with very thick necks or overestimate it for those with specific muscle distributions. However, it remains one of the best non-clinical tools available for tracking progress. If you are an athlete adjusting your diet to lower your body fat, you may also benefit from our calorie deficit calculator or keto macro calculator.
Is my health data saved when I use this tool?
Absolutely not. This calculator runs entirely on your device within your browser. Your measurements are never sent to a server, stored, or tracked. Your privacy is 100% guaranteed.
